First, read my overall philosophy on learning, especially while traveling.
Tools:
- Writing – Journals or spiral notebooks; sketchbooks
- Reading – e-readers (we like Kindle Paperwhites) synced to your local library; lightweight picture books for your learning-to-read crowd
- Math – UNO cards, math dice, math wrap-ups
- Geography – laminated pocket map
- Misc. – iPad, miniature white boards + dry erase markers
Curriculum:
- History – Story of the World (we bought the audio version, then transferred the mp3 files to our iPad)
- Handwriting – Handwriting Without Tears
- Math – Teaching Textbooks (though you’ll need a CD drive)
iPad Apps:
- Foreign language – Duolingo
- Math – Khan Academy as our main resource; Splash Math, Math Bingo, and Sushi Monster for enrichment
- Language Arts – Spelling City, Logic of English’s Phonograms, and Wet Dry Try (handwriting practice)
- Reading – Audible and Librivox for audiobooks, Free Books for books in the public domain, iBooks to hold any PDFs or digital teacher’s manuals
- History – This Day in History, Timeline Builder (clunky, but I’ve yet to find a better timeline app), and various apps for specific locations (several art museums have good guide apps, for example)
- Other – TapTyping for typing, Merriam-Webster for a dictionary and thesaurus, Classic Board for a digital chalkboard, Wikipedia for reference, YouTube for watching stuff.
