A 30 minute spring wreath tutorial
Written by contributor Jess Collier of If Only They Would Nap.
My poor front door has been bare since Christmas.
I usually have a different wreath/decoration to go with each change of season or holiday. During the last trimester of my pregnancy, however, all seasonal decorating went out the window. But now I’ve been cooped up in the house a bit, with the recent arrival of baby number four, and there’s still no spring in sight in Wisconsin.
So a new spring wreath was in order! And one that I could make in thirty minutes or less (you know, before baby wakes up!).
Supplies:
- pre-made wreath (you can find these at any craft store)
- ribbon or lace
- fabric or wool scraps
- needle and thread
- fabric glue
- buttons
1. Wrap ribbon or lace around the wreath. Glue the ends on or tuck them into the wreath.
2. Cut strips of fabric. The length/width will depend on how big you want your flowers to be.
3. Fold strips in half.
4. Fold and twist the strip in a circle, layering the fabric as you go around. There is no “right” way to do this. Find a way that works for you. I made some that have more of the fraying edges showing and others that show more folded edges. Embrace the imperfections!
Using a needle and thread, tack down the layers as you go. When you reach the end of your fabric strip, sew through all the layers at the center, securing them together.
5. Before you tie off your thread, add a button.
6. To give the wreath a little different texture, add a couple of flowers in felted wool scraps. I used this method for making these flowers – it produces a little different result with wool vs. the knit fabric in the tutorial. But I really like how they look and what they add to the wreath.
7. Arrange the flowers onto a scrap piece of felted wool. Use fabric glue or a hot glue gun to secure the flowers. Then trim away any excess felt, so that no one will see it when you’re finished.
8. Glue the flower arrangement to your wreath and admire your handiwork.
I love how this wreath added a pop of spring to our front door – and it was an easy project to fit around a newborn’s unpredictable schedule!
How are you today?Do you decorate for the seasons? What spring decor projects are you working on?
