Welcome to SimpleOrganic.net!

Simple Organic is all about natural, sustainable living for regular people. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably busy taking care of yourself, your family, your home, your job, your friends… There is not a lot of time left over for other things, and let’s face it – if something’s too hard or time-consuming, often we just don’t do it.

Sometimes the lingo of the green movement can be confusing and foreign: What the heck is a carbon footprint? What’s the difference between organic, local, natural, pastured, and free-range? What exactly is BPA? VOC? CSA? SPF? (OK, we probably know that one!)

But green, healthy living doesn’t have to be overwhelming, though it often feels that way. The goal of Simple Organic is just as it sounds: to make things simple. Accessible. Do-able!

•We want to remove the confusion and help you sort through the green hype, so that you can discover what is most important for you and your family.

•We want to provide you with knowledge, easy tips for small changes, and big ideas for great changes.

•And we want to help you prioritize and set goals – because not everyone can do everything, but we can all do something. And every little bit helps. (Really!)

I grew up believing that it was my responsibility to help care for the Earth. Now, as an adult, that belief is also a big part of my faith. I think that being a good caretaker of the Earth is one of the most important reasons that we are here. But I’ve learned that it goes beyond the basics of recycling and remembering to turn off the lights when I leave the room. And I’ve found that the choices that are best for the Earth are almost always best for our health, too, – and vice versa.

I am by no means an expert on green, healthy living – just a pilgrim on the journey. Simple Organic also has an amazing team of contributors whom you will meet very soon; every Wednesday, expect to read something wonderful from one of these ladies.  Each of them has their own unique voice to add to this conversation, and I know we will learn so much from them.  Check out their profiles here.  Here is just a sampling of some things we hope to cover in the coming months:

  • homemade cleaners
  • gardening
  • re-purposing items
  • natural health
  • eco-friendly travel
  • natural parenting
  • real nutrition
  • and much, much more!

I also want to mention that Simple Organic is part of a larger network of blogs called Simple Living Media. Make sure you take a minute and go check out Simple Mom, Simple Kids, Simple Bites, and Simple Homeschool. The latter two are both launching today, as well, and all four of them are led by stellar women who really know their stuff. You can also find the links to these blogs at the top and bottom of the page on each site.

I hope you’ll join us on this journey. Thanks for stopping by today. And be sure to come back tomorrow – there will be an amazing prize package giveaway! You will not want to miss this one!

I want to hear from you: What brought you here today? Is there anything about the green movement that has been confusing to you? What topics would you like to see covered on Simple Organic?

  5. Choosing to live simply is something that does not come easily to me. From living simply, eating simply, raising my children simply… I want to learn from it all!

  6. Congratulations, Katie! I’m so thrilled to be a part of this and to see all that SO has to offer–amazing stuff ahead!

  7. I’m so excited about this site, Katie! I love the idea of keeping “going green” simple. Because it can be overwhelming! I know I’m going to learn a lot from you.

  8. When you are on a budget, what is most important to buy organic and what doesn’ matter as much?

  9. Having been “greening” for a long while but always looking for easy, SIMPLE, do-able additional ways to make our lives greener and healthier!

Welcome! Looking forward to all sorts of new ideas!

  10. Welcome Katie and Simple Organic! This blog is coming along at a perfect time in my life as I’ve lately felt really convicted about our diets – and greatly confused by all of the different opinions about what is really good for you, good for the earth, and what “organic” means.

As far as organic homekeeping …. um, is it considered organic if I have free-range dust bunnies?

Best Wishes and Congratulations on your launch!

  11. I am so excited about Simple Organic! The topics you have described are the exact ones I have been struggling with. I’m trying to educate myself about organic and sustainable choices while continuing to get everything done and I feel I so often fall short. I look forward to some excellent guidance!

  12. As a single mom with a 7yo and a 9yo, I’ve found the move to a more “green” lifestyle a very gradual process. Some days, convenience is critical to my sanity, and convenient and green don’t always mix. But we’re making progress, a little at a time, in ways big and small (okay, more small — but it adds up!).

I’m a huge fan of Simple Mom, and I’m excited to see Simple Organic. I look forward to the information on gardening, nutrition and re-purposing items. And even more so to the inspiration for keeping it simple!

    • Gayle, I totally agree – sometimes convenient and green DON’T mix, and we have to make choices. But I hope people who read SO will feel like it’s OK if they don’t do every single thing they could possibly do. It’s great to just pick something and start somewhere. Gradual is a good thing – – way to go. 🙂

  13. I was green before it became cool. As a Chiropractor by profession I knew the importance of living green when it came to our health. I love that more of the country is starting to embrace it. Not so concerned with the environment – it will take care of itself (we don’t give it enough credit and frankly quite arrogant in thinking we could really do it much harm), but really want topics on things we put on and in our bodies. I’m in pursuit of a hobby farm and love the idea of sustainable living. Can’t wait to read more.

  14. I am SOOOO excited about this offshoot of Simple Mom!!! I have been a big fan of Simple Mom’s as I take my own journey towards simplicity. I especially enjoyed when she dabbled in the world of green so I am absolutely tickled that there is an entire blog dedicated to a simple, green lifestyle.

I am really looking forward to following what you and the other contributors write!

  15. Anne Marie says:

Welcome! I am so looking forward to this site. We have been trying to slowly work a more green and self sustaining lifestyle into our homes. Not just for health purposes, but for cost savings and for our society’s future. I can’t wait to put into practice some of the great ideas this site will provide!

  16. I am pretty new to trying to live a green lifestyle and I am taking baby steps. So I am looking forward to anything I can learn here!

  17. I am one of the contributors on Simple Bites, but I know I will be spending a lot of time here as well!

  18. Oh Boy am I excited!! My husband and I are trying to get pregnant with our first, and in that process I’ve been trying to cut out harmful chemicals from my body & our home. At first that just involved food, but then I slowly starting realizing just how many chemicals are around us. I would be very interested in organic cleaners & organic beauty solutions. The latter especially has me stumped.

  19. I’m VERY excited about this blog! I’ve been overwhelmed with all of the information out there – looking forward to learning more about going green through your posts – yay!

  20. How exciting! I’m here via SimpleKids and so looking forward to this blog. I am a new mom of a 10 month old and thoroughly enjoying cooking organic, nutritious foods for his little tummy. One thing I’ve been looking into lately is where to start with gardening. I wouldn’t say I have a particularly green thumb but would love to try my hand at it this spring. I would love to read any posts on where to start. Similarly, I’d love to create a compost bin and am curious about any tips.

I can’t wait to check in regularly with this blog!

  21. congrats! the whole suite of simple sites is just awesome! i’m really into homemade face and body creams, cleansers etc right now – so any ideas on that would be great as I’m just starting out. Also, homemade house cleaning stuff too. But it sounds like it’s all going to be exciting and worth while. YAY!

  22. so excited for the launch, and totally stoked to be involved with such a great team.

  23. I am so excited to hear about Simple Organic! I am a twentysomething working mom who tries to greenify things – the latest struggle I’ve had is the kook factor – I think most of my coworkers and co-moms think that it is too expensive or hard to do… thanks for launching this blog!

    • Terri, I know about the kook factor! 🙂 If only we could all become kooks, then we’d be normal. Hopefully SO will provide you with some tips that will appeal to everyone.

  24. I’m trying to learn more about organics since my husband’s migraines get triggered by some food additives. We’re also trying to eat more healthily. I can’t remembr how I got here.

  25. Yee hah, Katie! Simply, well said. I’m so encouraged by all the comments already! My favorite part? In your bio where it says you’re married to your best friend. Love that. I also love all the exclamation points in everyone’s comments. We’re fired up!

    🙂 Katie @ Kitchen Stewardship

  26. This is exactly what I need! I currently have two jobs and two young kids. I am really trying to go green but don’t have countless hours to research. Thanks so much!!!

  27. I’ve been a big fan of Simple Mom for a while now. I think her media group is fantastic!!I would really like the long term costs (think health care) of NOT living organically addressed. Everyone moans about the expense of pastured meat, organic produce, local food …but is it really that expensive in the long run? When we buy “cheap” food, is it really cheap? Going green is not that inconvenient when you change your priorities. I spend more time cooking, but less time in the grocery checkout and less time managing garbage and recycling. I think we are looking at a huge paradigm shift, and I hope this blog will help foster it.
