Mother’s Day Getaway giveaway!

This giveaway is now closed. Check here for the winner!

I‘m sure it won’t surprise you that I love to travel. I actually love to fly as well, especially if it’s sans toddlers — doesn’t happen often, so it’s a real treat. So I’ve got a fun surprise to celebrate Mother’s Day again. How would you like to get away… for free?

I’ve got two Southwest Airlines round-trip tickets to give away to a Simple Mom reader! You can use them for anywhere Southwest Airlines flies. Fun, eh? I’d use the tickets this fall to head to either or Boston or Providence so Kyle and I could drive to Martha’s Vineyard for our anniversary — it’s where we honeymooned.

Southwest Airlines is also throwing in some souvenirs (or in-flight entertainment) for the kiddos—a Southwest Flight Attendant Doll, an Airport Playset, and the LUV’ed onesie courtesy of Southwest Airlines.

Here are the contest rules.

How to Enter

1. Just leave a comment and tell me — As a mom, what is your favorite thing about flying Southwest? Go ahead and tell me where you’d fly to as well!  If you’re reading this via email, you need to click over to the blog to comment.

2. For an additional entry, tweet this giveaway mentioning this post’s URL (, @SimpleMom and @SouthwestAir. Then leave an additional comment telling me you tweeted.

Want another shot at winning? My friends at are also giving away a pair of tickets from Southwest Airlines, PLUS a luxurious trip to the Miraval Resort and Spa. Head over to enter.

  1. Theresa says:

The no charge for baggage these days is fantastic. I think I’d fly to San Antonio. I used to live there, and my husband has never been. A romantical getaway!

  2. I like the no baggage fees on Southwest. I hate paying $400/ticket and then pay for checked bags! I haven’t been out of the timezone since having my first 9 years ago, so I would love a trip anywhere not in CST!

  3. Definitely that they don’t charge for baggage!!! As a mom with small kids you have to pack a lot of stuff. It is so nice to pack what you need and be able to just check it and not worry about lugging extra stuff in a carry on. I would go on vacation with my Hubby!!!! It would be fun to get a way for a few days.

  4. Julie G says:

I like the low fares that make flying affordable. I’m not sure where I would fly – I like to run and might even pick out a race to fly to. That would be fun!

  5. Heather Girton says:

My favorite thing as a mom (and Southwest customer) is their focus on customer service — open seating, fun and friendly staff and a relaxed travel experience made our first toddler plane ride a lot of fun. If we could go anywhere, we’d go to Virginia Beach! (good friends and plenty of sand).

  6. GinnyRit says:

I love NOT having assigned seats and NOT having to pay extra for my suitcase! We would love to fly to Kansas City this summer to visit family; it’s the first year we’ve had to say “no” due to finances. Thanks for the opportunity!

  7. Heather says:

I like that there is no baggage fees! I would go see my nephew in California who is in the airforce! Miss him so much!!

  8. I love the no baggage fees as well. I really hate getting surprised by surcharges.

I would fly to the west coast, probably California. I’ve never been and I would love to go see the red woods and sequoia’s. Not sure how my 10 month old would do with the jet lag, but I know he’d love the trip. Outdoors is his favorite place to be. Now if I would just let him run around naked…

  9. Jennifer says:

    Hey, Tsh!

I like Southwest because they make corny jokes and the kids love them. The stewardesses never roll their eyes when they see you have young children – even when it’s 9 p.m. at night and they are on their last legs. They fly everywhere – including San Diego, San Francisco, San Antonio – and I am sure a few other San destinations that aren’t occuring to me now!

  10. I love that they take good care of my husband when he does his business travel. He loves Southwest! Hmmm… if I won I’d have a hard time settling on a location — dozens are floating through my mind right now. : )

  11. Merri B says:

I love that they’re affordable! I flew them to Vegas for my honeymoon. Might fly back there again if I win.

  12. Jennifer says:

    And I tweeted, too!!

  13. Monica says:

I could really use a getaway! I have flown Southwest a handful of time and only have good things to say – great service and their prices can’t be beat!

  14. I love how Southwest makes travel easy… from booking online with no problem, earning rewards tix easier than any other airline, always getting seats together, direct flights to so many places, free and easy flight changes, no nickel-and-diming, free checked luggage, great flight attendants and Spirit magazine. I’m sure I left something out, but those are the things that come immediately to mind.

As for where I’d go… I’d consult with my family to pick a place. It would probably be somewhere warm and in the winter when it’s so brrrr here.

  15. Kristine says:

I love that the staff is so friendly and the preboarding of kiddos. I’d go see my folks and fly into Love Field for a change!

  16. As someone who doesn’t fly very often … I would have to say that my favorite thing about Southwest is that they’d get me from point A to point B! I would go somewhere sunny and warm!

  17. Monica says:

    Tweeted! @thewilsonrules

  18. Karen Y says:

We love Southwest! Just everything. Their flights are always on time. No chosen seat. Nice and funny employees. Prices are usually the best. And I can afford a non-stop flight (which I prefer, since the less up and down and waiting, the better!) as easily as one with stops. If I won, we would probably fly up to NH to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. 🙂

  19. Pam H. says:

I love that so many of their flights are DIRECT!!! Yeah! I would probably go to Vegas for a grown up getaway with my husband, or FL to bask in the sun!

  20. Jennifer says:

I have never flown on Southwest. I have heard about their incredible rates and service. My neighbor is also a pilot for Southwest. I would love the opportunity to experience all I have heard about them!

  21. I love their baggage policy and how kid friendly the airline is.

  22. Wow! This is exciting!

We would fly to San Diego–get prepped for summer and visit friends!

  23. I love their cheap fares and that bags fly free!
I would fly to TX to see family!

  24. Felicity says:

As a little girl, my younger sisters and I often flew alone visiting our dad out of state. We loved flying SWA because the staff was so friendly and fun!

  25. Karen Hamaker says:

I love the ease of Southwest’s boarding…get on and find a seat! 🙂 And I pack a ton of stuff so 2 bags free is AWESOME!!! I want to see Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon!! Or go to Orlando or Colorado to see family!

  26. Pam W. says:

I like that the airline does not charge for bags. I would visit Santa Fe with the free tickets!

  27. christina says:

I LOVE to fly Southwest as they fly out of Midway Airport which is only 30 minutes from my house and I also like the fact that they not only allow you two bags per person, but they don’t charge for them at all!

  28. Teresa says:

I love the free baggage check and hassle-free buying experience from their website.

  29. So many things to love about Southwest–I love that they’re usually less expensive than all the other airlines, that they still offer free checked bags, and best of all–pre-boarding with the children and picking our seat!

  30. what a great giveaway! I don’t think I’ve flown SW as a mom, tho I have back in my pre-kids days. I love that they are priced competitively and don’t have all those extra fees.

When traveling as a family, those things really add up!

  31. Vanessa says:

The open seating policy is great for families. And they truly have the friendliest staff in teh industry. I’ve been dreaming of a beach getaway, I’d grab my BFF and fly to Florida.

  32. Martha says:

I like the affordable prices of Southwest. I would fly somewhere where there is lots of nature and where I could restore myself.

  33. Karen Y says:

    I tweeted it! @kyoung123

  34. Rachel says:

Southwest is one of my favorite airlines to fly, last time i flew there were no baggage fees and I could check in before we left home so I didn’t have to stand in line to check in at the airport.
My husband and I would fly to Maine for my birthday and a reunion this summer!

  35. Terri F says:

I love that Southwest does not charge for your first piece of luggage when so many other domestic airlines do. They also go to so many cool destinations! If I won, I would take my hubby to somewhere warm…probably sunny Florida, one of our favorite places to visit!

  36. Oh my gosh, where to begin! First, we ONLY fly Southwest because we have small children. They are extremely family-friendly and I believe the only airline in existence that still doesn’t charge for luggage. If I won, we’d fly to my sister’s house in Spokane, WA!

  37. I love flying Southwest because they’re tickets are so affordable. I would fly to Florida to spend sometime with my sister and her family (and hit the beach of course!)

  38. I’ve never flown Southwest Airlines, but have heard a lot of great things about them. Love their “bags fly free” commercials. I would probably head somewhere warm…

  39. I like their staff-very warm and friendly. I also like that they do not charge for luggage!

Would love to take my husband out east this fall!
    Thanks for the chance.

  40. It’s been so long since I’ve flown southwest (mostly i fly international to see my missionary family), that I’m having a hard time remembering if I even ever did fly southwest! 🙂 I would want to fly with my husband to Colorado and revisit some of our honeymoon places, or fulfill my dream and visit the New England states. What a great giveaway!

  41. I love the fun atmosphere! I would fly somewhere new we had never been before.

  42. I love southwest because they are family friendly and have really good fares. I would love to take my son to florida

  43. allison says:

They are sooo family friendly, from the no bag fees to the crayon kits my kids sometimes get…and let’s not forget about the snacks. It’s the only airline I fly for these reasons!

  44. Amy Mathison says:

I love that they are light-hearted and make the flying experience fun. And you gotta love that bags fly free! I would go somewhere (anywhere!) with my hubby for our 10th anniversary.

  45. I love how friendly their staff is. I’ve never had a bad experience with them!

  46. They make it easy and have a great attitude. I would go someplace fun!

  47. We fly southwest often to bring my son to visit grandparents. They really are friendly and have better service than many other airlines I’ve flown! And you can’t beat free baggage when grandparents are constantly buying stuff to send home with us.

  48. I tweeted

  49. I have never flown as a mother, or on southwest. I would love the opportunity to take my husband somewhere, he has never been on a plane.

  50. Sommer Maxwell says:

They make safety information hilarious! I’ve flown with them since I was a kid and they always have me smiling!

I’ll be retweeting the info as well!

  51. Favorite things about SWA? Too many to count! The fares, the customer service, they leave ON TIME, they sing songs to us, Sesame Street characters arrive at the gate for your kids.. What’s not to like? I think we’d fly to Boston this fall so my husband can show my daughter and I his old stomping grounds.

  52. I love online check in, and singing on some of the flights 🙂 I might go to San Francisco and visit wine country.

  53. Jessica says:

I love them for many reasons, but the one thing that improved my life the most was probably the free bag checking. When my family moved from the West Coast to the East Coast, we spent 3 months in an apartment while we were house-hunting. For those 3 months, we lived out of the bags that we checked and carried on our Southwest flight to our new city. (Everything else was a PODS container we stored for a few months and then unpacked at the new house. )

  54. They are great with kids! Especially when they are flying alone. I would use the tickets to take a trip to see our family back east.

  55. sara l says:

Southwest is friendly and efficient. They make it easy to fly!

  56. Just tweeted the giveaway!

  57. mikkin says:

You can pre-board with kids—even if you don’t have the correct seating! So much easier.

  58. Kate F. says:

I like that their fares tend to be reasonable. I think I would fly someplace warm.

  59. Kary Ross says:

I love flying Southwest because they are ALWAYS so prompt in taking off when it’s time to get “on the road”!! I would probably take my husband to the Florida beach in the Gulf because I just soooooooooooooo wants to go this year and we can’t seem to find the time to drive and flying isn’t an option now because of the expense for both of us to fly! I say beach! And, Southwest now has added Panama City Beach to their itinerary! Yay!

  60. If we can take kids on a airplane with with pleasant staff, then we are totally in! We would definitely take a family vacation!

  61. I love Southwest! We flew Southwest for our adoption last fall because we knew we could change our tickets at the last minute without any fees (just difference in airfare)! We bought tickets around the birthmom’s due date in October, but she called in September telling us they were going to induce her early. We called Southwest and changed our tickets without any hassles or fees and left within a couple hours!

Where would we fly? We want to take our family with our newest (who is now 7 months old) to visit my Granny in Texas. She is 93 1/2 years old and SO wants to see us! We are hoping to fly this summer. She is moving closer to my parents since my Grandpa died last fall.

I have been Southwest loyal for years and years! I love their prices, no baggage fees, pre-boarding with infants, the fun flight attendants, and the ability to change tickets without big fees and hassles!

  62. Meggan D. says:

Free baggage check is my favorite… and the low fares. I’d fly to San Diego for a nice romantic weekend with my honey!

  63. I love that you don’t have to pay for bags. I think we would use the tickets to fly to VA this summer. We were planning on driving, but flying would give us 2 extra days there.

  64. Oh my hubby and I NEEEEEEEEED this get-away. November will bring our 20 year wedding anniversary. How is that happening already? The thought of taking Southwest Air, without kids (whom I dearly love) to the beautiful wine country of California…or Martha’s Vineyard…or Chicago… or ANYwhere of the many places SW Air flies would be a HUGE treat. We live a stone’s throw from our Nation’s Capital, so a different pace would be gladly welcomed. Fingers Crossed!

  65. Michelle Manke says:

The best thing about flying is getting there QUICKLY! No little boys screaming in the back seat because they want out or are uncomfortable trapped in their car seats for hours! If I won the tickets I would go any place sunny! Tired of this cold rainy northern weather, yuck!

  66. I love that bags fly free. I’d much rather know the total cost upfront than have lots of random fees tacked on after the fact.

  67. Kary Ross says:

I also tweeted twice about this giveaway @karylila!

  68. Mary Joyce says:

I love the affordability of Southwest and the fact that there are no hidden fees associated with the ticket. I would love to fly to Seattle, WA. My husband has told me stories about the city and I have never been to that part of the country.

  69. Southwest always has LOW fares.. Yahoo!! and free bags? Who wouldn’t love that. They have always been helpful when I fly with my little children too! I would love a trip and really would go anywhere!!! MN has had the longest winter I can remember.

  70. You can’t beat Southwest’s customer service! I would fly myself and my hubby to Utah to do some amazing hiking and camping!

  71. Vicki Wingo says:

Love SouthWest! I would fly away with my husband to California! I have never been past the Mississippi and would love to see Cali!

    So exciting!!!

  72. Southwest always has friendly staff and love that they still over treats. 🙂 Our daughter is in the hospital so when she is well, I would love to go anywhere with my husband for a getaway…truthfully, I don’t care where. 🙂

  73. Jen M. says:

I love that the flight attendants are so fun. I especially like it when they tell jokes or sing the safety message. I would go home to visit my parents in California.

  74. Marion says:

You can seat any where you would like! Much cheaper (free) baggage fees.

  75. Jeanna says:

I am actually flying Southwest for the first time on Saturday. So far, my favorite things are the no baggage fees and friendly customer service. I hope that the rest of my experience is just as good. I don’t know where I would go, I have too many possibilities.

  76. Jen AM says:

I love their friendly attitude of their flight attendants.

  77. Jen M. says:

I love that the flight attendants are fun. I especially like when they tell jokes or sing the safety message. I would use the tickets to visit my parents in California.

  78. Amanda Gray says:

Their prices, and it’s the only airline that I’ve never had a bad experience with.

My husband and I would fly to Seattle for my best friend’s wedding. We otherwise don’t know how we could afford to do it!

  79. I love to fly southwest because they have awesome online prices that can’t be beat. I would visit my family in Cali. I miss them.

  80. Jill Marie Codere says:

I’d have to say my favorite thing about flying Southwest would be the smiles from the staff!! I remember the last time I flew with them the smiles from every single person I encountered were quite surprising. A smile goes a long way and it certainly calmed my nerves and made me feel less nervous about flying.

If I won the tickets I would fly to Savannah, Georgia to visit my little brother and sister-in-law! They just moved there and I’d love to see their new home. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen them!

  81. Jenn Owczarczak says:

Fav thing about flyinf SW is that you get to pick your seat- With two kids the last thing I want to do is sit next to someone who will give me dirty looks all flight long!

  82. My fav thing about flying Southwest is the convenience! It’s easy to book on their website and the service is fab onboard. I’d love to go somewhere in the south west (how corny) – silly but true, it’s still chilly here in Boston!

  83. Jennifer M says:

The free bags! With a toddler, it is so difficult to fly without checking luggage!

  84. Christina says:

I love Southwest because they are so funny! Even if my kids are having a meltdown or I’m a little stressed, they usually have a few jokes to brighten the flight 🙂

  85. Jill Marie Codere says:

    I tweeted too!!

  86. Deb A. says:

I love that they don’t still do not charge for baggage like all airlines used to do. I’d fly some where warm. We here in Wisconsin are still experiencing winter temperatures.

  87. I love that Southwest is reliably the most budget friendly flying around. There are several places I’d like to go with the tickets: Hilton Head for a college girlfriends getaway, for a weekend in the NE somewhere with my Honey or Michigan to see some dear friends… so many to choose from!

  88. Elizabeth S says:

I love that Southwest is so simple. You have a pretty good idea of what the fare will be both ways and it doesn’t change much.

  89. Kerstin says:

The folks who work for Southwest have a fantastic sense of humor! It makes flying so much more fun.

  90. Carrie P. says:

About two weeks ago we had a family emergency and had to buy plane tickets the night before we needed to fly. I checked multiple airlines, and Southwest had by far the best price and most convenient times for traveling. I love SWA!

  91. Jennifer says:

I’ve never flown Southwest before, but I hear it is a wonderful airline!!

  92. The no baggage fee is a pretty big deal these days!
I would have a hard time choosing between vacationing and visiting family, but I’d probably have to say somewhere in the Napa Valley area for a couple get-away we’ve been talking about.

  93. Catherine says:

I have never flown on Southwest, but would love to! I have always been impressed by their mission of providing inexpensive, reliable service. That’s all we need, right? My husband travels to California for business, but we’ve never been able to fly out and meet him for the weekend. I would love to take my daughter to San Francisco and see the city for the first time!

  94. I love the ease of online booking and the fact that I can check fares for several days at a time with their fare saver calendar. No baggage fee is great too! I would head home to Massachusetts to see my mom. She is 82 years young but I have not seen her in over a year.

  95. Love the commercials. Love the affordability. Love that they don’t charge for checked bags.

I’d take my sweetie to Albuquerque, where he’s never been, and where my aunt has a vacation house she’d let us stay in.

  96. My favorite thing about flying Southwest is no baggage fees. We’d take the tickets and fly to Seattle. Thanks for the giveaway!

  97. Jessica Y says:

I love the prices! I would either choose Seattle or the Keys! Thanks for the opportunity!

  98. Denise says:

I love that Southwest is so generous with how many bags we can bring for free! It’s even better when you consider a lap child in tow. I’m thankful we live in the south and can fly SW for most of our trips. Hmmm…where will I go?

  99. Jennifer says:

I like the funny flight attendants…they always make me laugh at their popsicle stick joke like humor. 🙂 I’d head to California to see family and old friends.

  100. I like that they don’t charge extra for baggage. They sure add up. Not sure where I’d fly to! Exciting!
