The nesting place

I remember when I first met Myquillyn. It was in Nashville about six years ago, and we were both attending our first blog conference. She remarked about how small my purse was—at the time I carried a little clutch of a thing. I found it amusing she even noticed it.

Over the years, we’d go back and forth with questions about the business, discovering that we were both INTJs (the rarest personality type of all for women), and generally seeing eye-to-eye on almost everything. Even though we have fairly different blogs, we’re both passionate about our words making a difference, and it’s safe for me to say that she’s one of my favorite people. We podcast together frequently, too.

And this week, her newest baby was born into the world! I am so psyched to love all over The Nesting Place, and to give five of you a chance to win it!

the nesting place

See, there’s one thing I adore about Myquillyn’s book, what set it apart from normal home decor books: it’s actually a book about imperfection.

You won’t find tips on how to keep your shelves perfectly dusted, a DIY instructions on how to make a slipcover without any puckers or wonky corners, or otherwise convince you that you need more space.

the nesting place at home

In these pages, you’ll find a clarion call to love where you already live, and for making what you already own work for you. The decluttering minimalist in all of us (okay, maybe just inside me) can shout from the street corners about this book, because it’s a book about loving your home. Not about making your home loved on Pinterest.

Myquillyn shares her own story about living in a bajillion homes in just a few years, and what each home has taught her about herself, her family, and what really matters in life. She’s a normal person with a keen eye for what works where—and then has a knack for sharing her ideas and encouragement in an approachable, sisterly way.

Every page has photos. The typography is beautiful. It’s even pretty without the jacket. And I, the minimalist, have kept it out on my side table just because it’s pretty to look at.

This would make an ideal Mother’s Day gift. And five of you will win one!

Wanting to make our house a home.

  28. Jeanette

In a culture of HGTV and pervasive, perfection and image-focused influences telling us what our homes, apparel, families, and lives “should” look like, we need more voices like this one calling out to remind us that home is a place that should genuinely reflect our families’ preferences, personalities, and priorities from within. There is intrinsic beauty in the uniqueness and imperfections of who we are that translates well into livable warmth and space to grow together at home. Hope to read it!

Yes, the book sounds like a ton of fun. She’s the one who said “it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful”, yes? I need that!

  89. Amy Rogers Hays

Nesting Place is the only decorating blog (although it’s so much more than that!) that I read, because she makes me want to make something beautiful without making me feel that I have to spend a ton of money or that right now I am somehow less because I don’t have the perfect home. 128. Elizabeth

I would love this book – I find myself getting frustrated with my home and suffering from Pin envy. Rather than trying to work with what I have all I see is how that space isn’t how mine is shaped and therefore what they did won’t work. 277. Katie

As a wife and mother of 3 who lives communally with my parents and two brothers ages 22 and 16 finding a nesting place is quite the challenge. Especially since when I have spent the money or tried to create on, those who live with me tend to undo it. I would love to read this book and learn how to create a nest whatever my living circumstances.

  278. Susan

I enjoy her blog and would very much like a book to help me “love” my transitional, wonky old home. 😉

  279. Addie

This is so cool! Just coming out of a huge construction project (inspired by Tsh’s book One Bite At A Time – project on making your home work for your family), I can totally relate to this. You need to be happy and comfortable in your home, your sacred space. For us, it means a place of rest and fun and love and being ourselves and living our mission statement – celebrate family, friends, traditions.

I’m guessing this is just open to the US readers, but I must say that this book looks so good! We all need to learn how to be content with and make the most of what we have.

  291. Lisa

    Pick me!
    1. It’s my birthday
    2. I am a fellow INTJ, and
    3. I recently accepted for myself that my house is perfectly imperfect and I am trying to switch off the part of me that sees the imperfections first. It’s a process and I think this book would help me.

  292. Donna

It’s always nice to find fellow minimalists. Many of my friends and family tease me about my minimalist leanings (lovingly, of course), but as I grow older, it becomes an even bigger part of who I am. I just want room to breathe. My husband has always called me a “nester” and this seems like a perfect read. On a totally separate note, I happen to be a nester that loves to watch 48 hours and Dateline or almost anything on ID. Does it strike anyone else that the second photo appears to be a beautifully staged crime scene with blood spatter. Or is it just me and the fact that I need to re-watch last season’s Hannibal and catch up???!

  313. Blanca

Love your home instead of making your home loved on Pinterest. LOVE it!!

It seems like there are a million ways to be dissatisfied with our homes—magazines, Pinterest, television–they all work against us by showing us what a beautiful house should look like. But what if our lives (and our resources!) take us in a different direction? I applaud anyone who writes about avoiding the sin of comparison and helps us live with contentment. My “nest” has become a “place” that I usually want to fly away from. 🙂 It is in need of purging . . . and loving. We’ve been here for over 15 years . . . and have wanted to move for years – but it was not feasible. So . . . learning to love this full and imperfect nest. I love what’s in it . . . my 5 kids and hubby! 🙂 Just not all the clutter!

  387. Jessica

Just had a bout of jealousy over my sisters lovely new home. We visited just before they closed the sale and the house hasn’t been lived in for months so it was, above all the other wonderful qualities, a blank slate for them to make their own.

I have found that my way to work through my jealousy is to try to be in my own home with fresh eyes. A little extra cleaning here and a few things I am ready to let go of there. A little extra time to sit and knit so that I can feel what it is to be here.

With that said, I could use a little help finding my way to loving where we are in all its not-blank-slated-ness. And as usual, here comes Tsh with just what I need next.

  388. Kim Gibson

I will have to go back to my Do What You Are book and take that personality test again because I’ve forgotten exactly what category I fall into, but it was a rare one. The first letter was definitely “I” as I am an introvert. This book is sure to be wonderful. I am a huge fan of Myquillyn’s blog.

When I got married, Martha Stewart was all the rage, making homemakers everywhere feel like their houses had to be perfect all the time. My home is imperfect and cluttered, so of course I get anxious having people over. And I desperately need to get over that.

We all love being there and feel so at home. Though when we say it’s cozy (and it it is!) she hears – small, and on and on and on. I love this idea!!! Due to my husbands job, it has been a challenge for me to “settle-in”, as we never know how soon the next move will come! And, with three kids, I yearn to give them that sense of roots, although they might be more like those of an air plant;/

  416. Bobbie Czajka

I’d love to take a gander at this book. I’ve stopped collecting books (almost) because my collection was bigger than my house! BUT, I just have a smaller collection now. Would love to win it.

  417. Janis

Wow! Would love to win this book. When you explained the personalities you have in common I actually clicked on the link and took the personality test and found I am a infd. Personalit. Very interesting and also explained why I love the sound of this book! Thanks!

  418. kate

I would love a copy of this book! I am so tired of feeling guilt from a disorganized home, but I know some things need to change in order to help reduce the chaos…

I have a feeling this book would help my family find some much needed middle ground 😉

  419. Jess Presley

Sounds like a great help for us as we bought a fixer upper and are remodeling it ourselves, its always been a challenge for me to decorate and organize as im not naturally girly that way;))

  421. lbe

  440. Kimberjo

Looks like a beautiful book. Thank you

  441. Rebecca

I’m still learning to embrace imperfection (though the look of my house would make you think I’m a little too comfortable with it :-)! ), but the Nester is a great encouragement to me. She’s one of only two decorating-type blogs I read. The other is about small space living and also embraces ordinary life. So much better for me than the Better Homes & Gardens slideshows I used to look at!

  442. JoDi

Another INTJ here! I would love to read this book. It sounds so different!

Love the idea of making what I have work. Sometimes the difference between just right and out of sorts is a tweak here and there, not a complete redo. Hoping this will help me look at my spaces with a fresh eye.

  454. Jenn

I would love to read this! Thanks for the opportunity!

  455. joyce landry

  535. Stephanie

Just the other day, a younger friend of my husband stopped by our house to pick something up. He said to me, “Your house is beautiful!” I don’t think I have EVER looked at my house and thought “beautiful” – but this visitor looked past the papers piled in the corner of a bench seat, stray toys on the floor, mismatched furniture in the living room… all the imperfect stuff that I look at and feel critical of myself for… He made me remember where the beauty of home comes from – the people inside, overhearing the laughter of three kids playing together in another room, the simple fact that we have a home! I’d love to read this book. “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful” really resonates with me. 🙂

I am not crazy!” and realize that my traits are a part of a larger whole and that there are others who also have those traits. I guess I can’t explain it properly because making words make sense is not my thing… but it helped. 😉

I might be moving soon, and over time I have realized how small things can make a place so much more beautiful and inviting. I usually tend to go with functional and live quite happily and content. But I know that there is more that could be done. I used to think I couldn’t cook. And then I found some cooking blogs and books that suited me and my time lines of what I wanted to spend in the kitchen. I can learn. And I look forward to learning from the Nesting Place. 🙂

Its interesting that this would be your post for today. I was driving along DETERMINED not to have my phone distract me and thought about my recent move from a house I loved to a house I love to downsize and see where it is I really WANT to live. I realized I don’t know what my style is because I have been a second-hander for so long…but that I adore domesticity and making a home, NESTING. We’re in a new-to-us home and are slowly working on projects to make it more in line with our goals and likes, but it can be so hard to not just see the “blanks” – the places where this home doesn’t live up to the finished product I can see in my head. I’m learning to say “maybe we’ll get there someday” and then enjoy what we do have.

Now that life has settled a little this would be ideal for me. It might help fit four souls into a small home easier.

As a newlywed with a passion for beautiful things and a not so big budget, I love the sound of this book. I so want to make my home a beautiful, personal, welcoming place but often feel frustrated at the lack of whatever it is at the moment that’s making my home imperfect. I want to embrace the imperfect!
