Birds in home decor

I realized recently that I have decorated with birds in almost every room of my home.  I didn’t even know that I was drawn to tree-dwellers, but their sweet presence does make me happy.

I bought these balsa wood birdhouses at a local hobby store and my husband painted them all different colors.  We unified the look by making all the roofs silver, then we hung them over my son’s crib.  They’re so incredibly lightweight that we weren’t worried about safety, but we still secured them really well.

When we moved into our house two years ago, I wanted to make a big splash in our home office.  It’s a space used almost exclusively by me, and I had my eye on this graphic bird wallpaper by Cavern home.

I picked up several of these very inexpensive little silver birds at the craft store in the clearance bin.  I had a different intention for them originally, but they’ve ended up migrating around the house.  I have them on the windowsill in the kitchen, on a ledge in the bathroom, and now on the mantle in my pink living room.

These white paper mache birds called to me from a little home boutique.  Now they sit on my formal dining room table.

Birds are such a versatile design element.  They can be both cute and sophisticated!

Are you as drawn to birds in home decor as I am?

  2. I find I can’t resist the appeal of birds, either! Owls, of course. But I also love red birds and blue birds and white canaries perched on green stands. There is something whimsical and also organic about having them around the house.

    Love this, HH!

  3. My husband has recently become enamored with birds and mostly, with birdhouses. He has hung them in our backyard from nearly every tree. Part of our thrifting is now searching for unusual, handmade birdhouses for his collection.

I also have an obsession with birds used in design. I’m not sure how it happened. I didn’t even notice until I was looking at my pins on Pinterest, and a vast majority are of birds…

  5. I love that wallpaper. It’s punchy and a tad whimsical without being overpowering.

  6. I’m actually NOT a bird person. With that said, whenever something is done well, I appreciate it…such as your wallpaper. I really like it a lot, but that may be less about the birds and more about the graphic nature!

  7. Love the wallpaper. It be a striking focal point.

  8. Possibly my first email to you was to find out where you found that fabulous wallpaper. I still have the information filed away!

  9. I’m loving that wallpaper!!! This post made me think of this video, LOL!

  10. Birds in my home just make me HAPPY. 🙂 Maybe I should clarify…LIVE birds flapping wildly around my living room do not! Birds frequently make nests in my front door wreath. During those seasons, I have to be very careful when opening the front door. Opening the door too quickly while mama bird is on her nest causes her to fly into our house. Eeek!

DECORATIVE birds in my home make me happy. Especially brightly-colored ones in unexpected spots.

  11. Hey does anyone know anything about oriental rugs? I’ve heard about does anyone have any experiences there? 🙂
